“Defenestration” on Hugo Hotel to be Sold

“Defenestration,” the SOMA art installation that involves 35 pieces of furniture hanging off the side of the Hugo Hotel, is coming down and the individual pieces are being sold by an online gallery. Creator Brian Goggin has been unable to find a new location for the piece in advance of the long-vacant hotel being razed.

“I have been care-taking Defenestration for seventeen years so of course I feel a strong, affectionate relationship with the artwork, and feel the loss,” Goggin said May 20. “However, it has been a good run for a temporary installation.”

The artwork is still on the building while a picture and price for each item, from the craning clock to the squiggly lamp, is listed at Varnish Fine Art. Prices run from $650 for a working lamp to $35,000 for the clock.

The furniture will come down during the week of June 2 through June 9. Each piece will then be removed and examined to see if preservation is necessary, as with any art work. It will then be shipped to the new owner, bearing the signature of Goggin, and a certificate of authenticity.

“I originally thought it might last only six months,” Goggin, 48, said of the work which went up in March, 1997. “Now I am happy the artworks may find new homes with collectors as part of it’s migration from the hood.”
